The Noahide and the Purification of Edom

By this, he meant that the detailed narrative of the brothers’ meeting prefigures the grimness of life in exile experienced by the exegete and his hopes for redemption. Here Nahmanides applied the principle that “the ways of the father serve as a sign for the son,” viewing the symbolic as a prophetic sign. Such signs are the guarantee that the prophet’s prediction will indeed come to pass.
